OVERVIEW In spite of all the preparations, whether it is a catechist's first year of teaching or twentieth year,the first lesson of a new year can cause apprehension. This topic is designed to reassure catechists of all levels to provide the beginnings of a personal "survival guide" to help them make their way through the first day and the entire year. OBJECTIVES 1. To identify questions catechists should ask before beginning a new year. 2. To review the steps to take before teaching each class. 3. To introduce the elements of a "Catechist's Success Guide." AIMS l. Each participant will be able to show what he or she needs as a catechist by noting given items and adding others to various checklists. 2. The participants will be able to share answers to commonly asked questions by catechists. 3. Each participant will be able to use given elements to put together a personal "Catechist's Survival Guide." Use a variety of materials and techniques to present the points of content and to engage the participants in the learning activity. Working with the Catechism The following will help you gain a better under- standing of discipleship as stated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. From the Catechism "The Church remains faithful to the interpretation of 'all the Scriptures' that Jesus gave both before and after his Passover" (#572). Read the Catechism Read #535–#598. Discuss the Catechism 1. Cite some examples of Jesus' knowledge of the Hebrew Scriptures. 2. How important is it for us to know the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures in order to succeed as a catechist?
